Quantum Kirk: Sundae, Bloody Sundae

When a response to an older personal ad that I’d placed online, garnered a reply, I was caught a little off guard. It’d been so long since I posted it that I’d forgotten all about it. The guy’s name was Reuben and he lived in a nearby city, thirty minutes away. He was in his early twenties, Hispanic and the manager of a McDonald’s.

We talked on the phone for a while before making plans to go to dinner and a movie. The plan was for him to meet me at my apartment, where we would carpool to the movie and then have dinner afterwards. Continue reading

Quantum Kirk: Table for Three

Continuing with my 0 for 0 dating way of life slump, I was more than a little excited when I met someone through the personals that I seemed to click with. We talked at length on the phone, as well as online. As it turned out, we were both big Morrissey fans, shared the same sense of humor, and we both liked to read. We made plans to meet for dinner at Pappadeux. I was really nervous. Not so much because I felt like this was fertile ground for romance, but more so because this guy could turn out to be something more…a potential friend. Continue reading

I lived in my first apartment complex (in Arlington) for around 3 years. Over time, the place began to go downhill and the management was in constant rotation. It seemed like every time I went to pay my rent, the management had changed…yet again. You know it’s time to move when your next door neighbor has a hook for a hand and Tejano music has become your neighborhood soundtrack. Continue reading

Quantum Kirk: White Lines

While attending college, I made assorted acquaintances (I hesitate calling them friends). One of them was a girl named ‘Stacy.’ I actually liked Stacy quite a lot. She was a very cool person, but like a lot of cool people I’ve met over the years, she made bad choices.

Stacy had the distinction of being my first (and come to think of it, ONLY) lesbian friend. We had a few classes together and would occasionally hang out outside of school. We would mostly go clubbing together and that’s where she met her girlfriend, “Renee.” In all honestly, I wasn’t too wild about her, but she always managed to get us into all the hottest clubs, no matter how long the line was, AND once inside, she and her guests (that included me) were treated like VIPs. I never really gave much thought as to the how or whys, I just sat back and enjoyed the ride. Continue reading

Quantum Kirk Meet Quantum Jerk

Then there was “Chip.” Chip worked at a car dealership. Our phone conversation seemed pleasant enough and he seemed eager to meet…for dinner. The word ‘dinner,’ in relationship to blind dating, should be a 4-letter word. I was content with meeting him at Uncle Julio’s (Fort Worth’s answer to Tex-Mex), but he insisted on picking me up. I soon found out why.

Chip arrives, we have some small talk in the apartment and I offer to drive, since he came all the way from Dallas. Chip gets solemn for a moment and asks me if I have a CD player in my car. Being 1991, I was still scraping by with a cassette player. This made Chip grimace. He responded with, “Let’s take my car. The sound of cassette cases rattling drives me crazy.” My eyes glazed for a moment. Fleeting thoughts of ‘what a jackass’ and ‘is he serious?’ ran through my mind. I said “Um, alright.” Continue reading

Quantum Kirk: No One Expects the Spanish Inquisition

Having struck out in both the real and virtual world, I focused my energy on phone and paper personals. I remember my first blind ‘date’ like it was yesterday. In my first ad, the sky was the limit. In addition to my “stats,” I went into detail (however bizarre) about what I was looking for. In addition to personality traits, I mentioned that physically, I liked muscular guys (bodybuilders, even)’ big noses; Roman features I believe they’re called.

I got a response. We talked on the phone and I was told by “Gordon” that he moved office furniture, thus his alleged muscular build. He also mentioned that he had the ‘big nose’ I’d mentioned having a soft spot for. We agreed to meet in Dallas at, what was, at the time, a TGI Fridays. I would soon find out that the only soft spot I had was in my head. Continue reading

Quantum Kirk: Electric Dreams…and Nightmares

Having quickly OD’ed on the bar scene, I looked to the precursor to the chat room, the BBS (Bulletin Board System)’ to meet new people. For the most part, not unlike the real world bars, the majority of the gay men were looking just for sex (some things never change).

However, I made a connection (or so I was led to believe) with a guy my age, who would be attending the same college as myself (UTA) come fall. Continue reading
