Hip Hip Blu-Ray!

As you may or may not know (via Facebook), a friend of mine recently got a new Blu-Ray player and gave me their old one (my first!). Needless to say, I was excited to get it.

Though it may not be the case, I feel like I’m one of the last of the Mohicans to jump on the Blu-Ray wagon. Being the proud owner of a very large DVD collection, I stubbornly denounced Blu-Ray. I don’t care what the commercials say, I still contend that DVDs will NOT be going the way of the Laser Disc, Betamax and/or VHS any time soon. Why, you may ask? Because there are just waaaay too many obscure movies, serials, documentaries, TV shows, etc. that will never see the Blu-Ray treatment. Just not gonna happen. I own a lot of those obscure titles, so I remain a multi-format person. Hell, I still cherish my LPs, CDs, books and other ‘dead’ formats. Suck on that D.A.R.Y.L. (or other contemporary cyborg of your choice).

With that said, my first Blu-Ray purchase took place on Halloween day at a nearby pawn shop (hands down THE best place to purchase Blu-Rays), where Blu-Rays range from $4-$7. Having worked in used DVD/VHS retail for years, I vehemently refuse to pay $15-$25 for a single DVD of any format. Just not gonna happen. So, my first Blu-Ray purchase was Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992). I thought it was an apropos choice considering the holiday.

Days, later, I purchased (also at area pawn shops):

Magic (1978)
Paper Man (2009)
Psycho (50th Anniversary Edition) (1960) and
The Shining (1980)

THEN, just yesterday, a friend notified me that our local Dollar Tree is selling Blu-Rays (limited titles) for, are you sitting down for this? …$1. YES, you read that correctly. That’s where I picked up:

Another Stakeout (1993)
Consenting Adults (1992)
Big Business (1988) and
Straight Talk (1992)

So, there you have it. My current Blu-Ray collection. It’s a start.

P.s. I haven’t actually seen Paper Man yet, but Ryan Reynolds in a form-fitting superhero outfit was all I needed to know. The movie could be complete garbage and I wouldn’t care. LOL!
