‘Muppets’ Sever Ties With Chick-Fil-A

Huffington PostLast Friday, the company behind beloved shows such as “Fraggle Rock,” “Labyrinth,” and “The Muppets,” severed ties with Chick-Fil-A due to the fast food chain’s CEO’s opposition to same sex marriage.

According to “Muppets” fan site ToughPigs.com, The Jim Henson Company had partnered with Chick-Fil-A to feature Jim Henson’s Creature Shop toys — “essentially a plastic tube with cut-out features for customizing your own puppet” — in their kid’s meals from mid-July until August 18th.

However, on Friday, the Jim Henson Company posted the following statement to their Facebook page:

The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD.

With this, The Jim Henson Company joins the ranks of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who has vowed to block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the city, office star Ed Helms who tweeted that the chain had “lost a loyal fan,” and the countless individuals who have taken to social media to voice disapproval, including those planning a National Same Sex Kiss Day on August 3, in condemning the Chick-Fil-A’s CEO’s opposition to same sex marriage.

Okay, I’ve known about Chick-Fil-A’s whole “Christian” stance for a while now, and even though I wasn’t a fan, I admit that I grinned and bore it because their nuggets are DELICIOUS. However, this last statement from the president of the company was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I mean, I’m not a militant supporter of gay gay marriage, but I am an advocate. I think what still amazes me the most are the comments these so-called “Christian” folk leave on sites where the news stories are posted. Some things NEVER change. These people are perfectly content being ignorant. I’ve stopped feeling sorry for them any more. It’s amazing the lengths people will go to to justify their homophobia. Whether it’s using Christianity, family, tradition or faux patriotism, it rarely varies from the script. Truly pathetic. ( Click any comment to enlarge )

And on a related note, on a recent visit to Target, I ran across these great Muppet notecards (8 count: they also have matching magnets and stickers!) for a mere $1 a package. Run out and stock up. I did!

For those unfamiliar with the hubbub that started this all, check out the statement issued 5 days earlier by the president of Chick-Fil-A:

The president of Chick-fil-A is speaking out in support of traditional marriage. In an interview with the Baptist Press, Dan Cathy said the popular restaurant chain is “guilty as charged” in its support of traditional marriage. “We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit,” Cathy said. “We are a family owned business, a family led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.”

“It might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles,” he added.

In a separate interview with the Ken Coleman show, Cathy suggested that the nation could face God’s wrath over supporting gay marriage. “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,” Cathy said. “I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we should have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is all about.”

Some gay rights groups have opposed Chick-fil-A in the past for its stance on family values. Cathy acknowledged that his stand may cost the company some customers but he said he intends to stay the course.

“Stay the course” Lame.

P.S. This was seen recently, posted at Chick-Fil-A… Typical “damage control”.
