Title: Mad Love (Mad love, les mains d’Orlac)
Director: Karl Freund
Starring: Peter Lorre
Genre: Horror

This is my all-time favorite Peter Lorre movie and one that I watch every Halloween. It’s such a visually beautiful film with a great premise: An insane surgeon’s obsession with an actress leads him to replace her wounded pianist’s hands with the hands of a knife murderer which still have the urge to throw knives. I get a kick out of the fact that everyone at Les Theatre Des Horreurs is dressed like a monster and such (the guy in the ticket booth, the doorman, the hat check girl)! I also love the cake that they serve on closing night (at Les Theatre Des Horreurs) is decorated with a guillotine on top and dancing skeletons along the side (click the image for detail)!

Since it was finally released to DVD 4 years ago (via the Hollywood’s Legends of Horror Collection), it’s a little more accessible. Definitely recommend it (and The Beast With Five Fingers, also starring Lorre, which, unfortunately, hasn’t made it to DVD as of this date. Thank goodness I still believe in the virtues of VHS)!

I remember seeing this when I was a kid—make that over 50 years ago–and it is one of my favorites, too.
