Awhile back I was reading this article online about celebrities and their wax figure doppelg√§ngers. I chose these celebrities in particular because I though their wax figures looked eerily identical. What do you think? Don’t be fooled by backgrounds! Can you tell which is which?

How to Be Your Own Best Friend by Mildred Newman & Bernard Berkowitz © 1984
Synopsis:In this unique, bestselling question-and- answer guide to self-love and acceptance, two practicing psychologists (who are also married to one another) reveal the secret of pursuing happiness, by revealing to ourselves what we think we are striving for, and what it is that keeps us from achieving our goals.
Comments: I know, I know. I said I was going to start steering clear of the “self-help” books, but this one caught my eye recently at the thrift store. Besides, it’s SUCH a quick read (less than 100 pages), that I thought “What’ve I got to lose?” Besides, even though I realize it’s close to impossible, it’d be nice to be able to be my own best friend and not worry so much about getting emotionally attached to other people. I realize that makes for a lonely existence, but befriending people inevitably leads to them leaving at some point, and that’s just miserable.

Anyway, the book was a quick read and did contain some interesting perspectives on how we think and the choices we make. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get to know themselves a little better and what it is they want out of their life.

Happy Mother’s Day
Sweaty Texan (AKA ‘P‘) I have to admit, it’s one of my favorite movie quotes as well. We should make it our next movie night movie!

Sarah Speaking of Grace Jones’ body, I’ll never forget the time she was on Johnny Carson and was wearing a one piece metal corset (complete with breasts). It was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. Johnny commented on it, and she took it off (she was wearing a jacket) and gave it to him. SO cool! I’d KILL to have some Grace Jones memorabilia! Continue reading

I recently paid a visit to a friend’s antique store in the nearby town of Handley, Texas. While I was there, I sat down and went through the tons of vintage Valentines he has to offer. These are the ones I ended up choosing to add to my ephemera collection. I’m also working on scanning and showing you the FIRST batch of Valentines I bought from him earlier this year, but never got around to showing you because of technical problems (see: Blackout ’09 under the ‘Life‘ category).

I like to choose the ones with ‘not the norm’ items/animals/situations you don’t often see on a Valentine card. Thus the apple, possum (my favorite!) and lightning bug choices. The next batch I have to show you include a ghost and a shark among others. Niiice! Also, I enjoy the occasional “mechanical” Valentine (i.e. they ‘move’ because of a brad or some such piece), like the swimming one shown here. The little boy wearing the heart-shaped boxers, “dives” off the diving board. Fun!

The first heart-shaped one at the bottom with the little boy & girl that says ‘Valentine, we could go places together,” I bought for P because he wants us to take a road trip to somewhere neither of us have been to before, which I think sounds like a lot of fun! I love road trips, but I can’t help thinking to myself: ‘2 gay men + random small Texas town= Matthew Shepard x 2.” I know I’m being paranoid, but it’s in the back of my mind. Of course, my friend, A, had a one word solution: firearm. LOL!

Also, the one with the little weenie dog (AKA ‘Dachshund’), is for my friend B, who has her own little weenie dog named Porkchop.

I recently hit the ol’ book jackpot at an antique mall I went to with A this past weekend. In the humongous antique mall that houses hundreds of sellers, there is one aisle solely dedicated to books…the majority of which are a mere $1 each! How can you possibly pass that up?! So, I settled in, got comfortable on the floor and here are my finds. Continue reading
