The Dumbest Generation : How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future [*Or Don’t Trust Anyone Under 30] by Mark Bauerlein © 2008

One positive thing about the ‘blackout’ was that I did a heckuva lot more reading and writing. One of the books I am devouring right now is The Dumbest Generation. I can’t put it down. I’ve wanted to read it ever since I saw the author interviewed on CNN’s Book TV on C-SPAN 2 one Sunday morning. I was intrigued. However, everywhere I went, they wanted $35 for it, so I just made a mental note and waited. And boy am I glad I did.

It’s kind of a catch-22: it’s fascinating and totally validates a lot of things I already suspected, but it’s also really frustrating. I swear, my blood pressure shoots up at least 2-3x per chapter. Then, naturally, I have to share the offending passages to friends and colleagues (I say colleagues, like I have a real job), and it doubles. I want everyone I know to read this book, because I just can’t begin to choose examples, there are so many. Statistics don’t lie, that’s all I can say. The future of books as we know them is is danger of becoming extinct if Gen Duh has anything to say about it.

Then, there’s the icing on the cake: the recent articles* in the Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star Telegram, decreeing that “old school” books made of real paper and such are relics of the past and that “e-books” are the future of student curriculums everywhere. Whatever. Fahrenheit 451 the future is now. A must-read.
