My Bloody Valentine 3-D

As an unspoken rule, I scoff at most remakes, or “re-imaginings,” if you must. Mostly because 9x outta ten, movies that were just fine the first time around, are being remade for the Cellphone Generation (Amityville Horror, The Fog, When a Stranger Calls, The Stepford Wives, etc.), with horrendous, diarrhea-inducing results.

However, I readily admit that I am looking forward to the latest “re-imagining” of one of my favorite 80’s slashers, My Bloody Valentine. I still fondly remember seeing the trailer on TV, back in 1980, and I’ve loved almost everything about it ever since: the movie poster, the premise, the killer’s uber-creepy look, the gruesome murders, the execution (no pun intended), etc. (the ‘almost’ comes because I wasn’t a fan of the banjo-riffic soundtrack).

So, when I originally heard it was slated to be remade, my knee-jerk reaction was “Whatever. What Disney Channel castoffs are gonna play the leads?” Then things started to look up: My man, Jensen Ackles was cast (HELLO!) and it was gonna be in 3-D! Boing! THEN I saw one of the early movie posters (shown) and it all fell into place for me.

NOW I find out that it’s not only in 3-D, but the good 3-D, not that bullshit red lens/blue lens crap that they’ve been passing off as “3-D” (circa 1991’s Nightmare on Elm Street 6). It’s not the GREAT 3-D of yesteryear either (circa 1982’s Friday the 13th Part 3/1983’s Jaws 3-D). It’s some new format that scraps the paper glasses for these newfangled (I’m old!) plastic glasses that look like sunglasses. GROO-OOH-VEE! Can’t wait! I’m super-psyched. Plus…Jensen Ackles AND Kerr Smith in 3-D. Double ROWR!

So, tonight, the plan is to go see it with a small group of friends (5 to be exact). If everything goes off without a hitch, it should make for a fun night of 3-D goodness. My review is forthcoming.
